What does horses and bees have to do about literacy?

Can you guess what horses and bees have to do with literacy? It is a tough question but the answer is really easy!  Horses and Bees raise money for literacy. Spruce Meadows with the support of ConocoPhilips and the Calgary Sun launched an initiative called “Horses Give a Leg Up” which was a response to the Southern Alberta Floods of 2013.

Through adversity came opportunity. Literacy for Life was chosen as one of the 20 non-profits to participate in this exciting project.  Not only did the organization have an opportunity to raise funds for programs; the initiative created a platform to raise awareness about literacy.

Each non-profit was supplied with a life sized fiber glass horse and $500.00 to purchase materials to decorate the horse.  This all had to be done in less than a month.  Prizes were awarded for best decorated – first, second and third place.  All horses were displayed at Spruce Meadows over the summer and were  up for auction to all interested bidders. We were very excited to place second demonstrating creativity and style. Our award winning horse brought in $7,000.00 in prize money.

The design of “Letter Go!” was chosen for its visual simplicity and its representation of our organization’s core values. The horse is divided into 9 sections, moving from black, through various shades of grey, to white. Each section corresponds to one of the 9 essential skills.  Thanks to Nicole Levesque for her vision.  We are awaiting the results of the online auction. Stay tuned for further information on the new owner of “Letter Go”.
